Review Summary:

In 2012, had enough of its customers going to Toyota, Nissan and Kia to fulfill their B-segment vehicle requirements; that’s when they decided to build a that would fill the gap in their line-up, and out came the built in Thailand Mitubishi Mirage.

Pros

For the budget conscious, it makes a compelling buy.

Cons

Interior materials aren't going to go down well with those who have a strong dislike for plastics.

Looks

The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is a rather simple looking hatchback. It doesn’t possess any fancy ripples or swooping curves and though that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it does look a little archaic with its triangular headlamps when parked beside the tech-laden, LED sprinkled rivals from Korea.

Feels

Plastic seems to have been the key ingredient when the interior of the Mirage was being put together. Identical to that of the Attrage, the interior features circular A/C vents, a piano black centre console and seating capacity for four individuals. In a car that feels like it belongs to the previous decade, the inclusion of push button ignition is not just surprising, but almost mind boggling.

Engineering

At AED 32,900 you can get your hands on the most basic variants of a Mirage. However, for fog lamps, a leather wrapped steering, 60:40 split rear seat and colour coded tailgate handle, you’ll have to climb the spec ladder and settle for the top of the line model, which will suck out a reasonable AED 38,900 out of your bank account.

What’s on offer?

Below its diminutive bonnet, the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage hides a 1.2 litre 3 cylinder engine that is mated to a CVT transmission and emits 78 horsepower and 100 Nm of torque. If for whatever strange reason the thought of speed crossed your mind while reading that, the 3,780mm long Japanese hatchback sprints from 0 – 100 km/h in a pedestrian 13.8 seconds.

Summing it…

If it’s heads you want to turn or fun you wish you to have behind the wheel, then the Kia Rio is your better bet. Sure it’s more expensive but it very well justifies its premium over the Mirage with a proper 4 cylinder engine, a well put together interior, and a significantly longer feature list.
