Review Summary:

Slotted between the smaller 3-Series and flagship 7-Series, the 5-Series takes the best of both world’s and is available in two body styles, a Sedan and Gran Turismo.

Pros

Interior quality is simply top notch.
Engine choices are abundant to suit your needs.

Cons

Exterior design isn't its strongest point.

Looks

When the predecessor to the current model reached the end of its life cycle in 2010, the sixth generation 5-Series emerged in 2011 with an improved suspension setup, a driver oriented centre console and significant improvements in its styling. Five years on, the 2015 model looks identical to the 2011 model with chrome outlines around the fog lamp housings, a prominent indent in the centre of the hood, and LED tail lamps. With straighter lines on the hood and pronounced headlights to accompany, the Gran Turismo does look a lot nicer though – from the front at least.

Feels

Along the dashboard, centre console and door panels, there is a generous splash of wood trim coupled with an abundance of leather and other soft touch materials. The 5-Series boasts an impressive list of standard features including a multifunction leather wrapped steering wheel and a 6.5 inch colour display across the range. For those who are able to get over the rather bulbous figure of the Gran Turismo, an increased 102 mm in wheelbase and 97mm in height over the Sedan results in better leg and head room for rear passengers.

Engineering

With the 2015 BMW 5-Series packing in a Traffic Jam Assistant that controls the car at speeds of up to 40 km/h and even brakes once the desired distance with the car ahead has been reached, getting agitated in traffic jams is a thing of the past. The 2015 5-Series is also available with Night Vision that utilizes a thermal image camera placed in the radiator grille that detects people and animals from 300 meters away and relays these images onto the Control Display in the centre of the dashboard.

What’s on offer?

With numerous engines on offer, the 5-Series caters to both, the fuel savers and the power hungry. The smallest engine in the line-up is the 2.0 litre 4 cylinder unit fitted in the 520i that puts out 184 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque and boasts a lousy 0 – 100km/h time of 7.9 seconds. On the other hand, the largest engine is the 4.4 litre V8 that resides in the M5 and sends 560 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque to the rear wheels and propels the German sedan from 0 – 100km/h in 4.3 seconds!

Summing it…

The 5-Series is BMW’s answer to buyers in the Mid-size Luxury segment. With a price tag ranging from AED 204,000 to AED 555,000, the price does seem steep, and if you’re one to pay close attention to the exterior of your car, you’ll know the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has the edge…
