Review Summary:

It's all good until you hear the price of the 2015 BMW 1-Series...

Pros

* Design that is sure to turn heads.

Cons

* Price doesn't seem fully justified.

Looks

It’s the smallest and most affordable way to enter the realm of Bavarian automobile ownership, but don’t be led into thinking it isn’t a stellar entry point. Undergoing a mid-life refresh for 2015, the 1-Series follows the brand’s design doctrine even more closely this time around and looks spectacular with its angular lights and sharp contours.

Feels

Being the most economical vehicle in the line-up, wood trim and soft touch materials have been traded for hard plastics. Yet, the interior is distinctly BMW and features a thick steering, a shift-by-wire gear lever and an orange backlit instrument panel.

Engineering

The 2015 BMW 1-Series is equipped with an Energy Regeneration system that begins to work as soon as you take your foot off the accelerator. The generator is engaged and converts excess kinetic energy into electrical energy which is saved and used to charge the battery.

What’s on offer?

There’s just one engine on offer – a 1.6 litre 4-cylinder unit that produces a sufficient 136 horsepower and 220 Nm of torque. Mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission, the German dispatches a 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.7 seconds and only runs out of breath at 210 km/h.

Summing it…

With a price tag of AED 120,000 for the 116i, the 1-Series is definitely not cheap. Sure, it may turn a few heads when driven down the street, but with the bigger and better 3-Series starting from AED 146,000 it’s a no-brainer when it comes to picking between the two.
