Review Summary:

The 2015 M-Class is a mid-sized luxury SUV which certainly matches the BMW X5 for looks, but is beaten for space by the Land Rover LR4.

Pros

* Good looks and a spacious interior help the Mercedes-Benz M-Class stand out.

Cons

* Chunky centre console.

Looks

The mid-size luxury SUV category is a fierce battleground. Vying for glory is the BMW X5, Volvo XC90, Land Rover LR4 and Audi Q7. For this market looks are everything, as these types of cars are more a status symbol than anything else. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is by far one of the best looking options out there, with its elegant lines and swooping back-end making it look refined and sleek.

Feels

Inside the M-Class you will find a typical Mercedes interior. There are lot of small details that have been carried over from other models, but that shouldn’t detract from the overall pleasantry. Leather is neatly stitched all around both you and the dash. Arguably the centre stack is too chunky, but on the other hand if it wasn’t you would be faced with a vast expanse of wasted space.

Engineering

There is easily more space for the rear passengers in the M-Class than you will find in the X5 or XC90. It’s not far off the LR4, if not the same. Boot space is huge, and when the seats are folded flat there is plenty of transportation space.

What’s on offer?

There are three variations of the M-Class on offer in the UAE; the ML 400, ML 500 and the ML 63 AMG. Prices are AED 253,000, AED 332,000, and AED 421,000 respectively. The 3.0 litre ML 400 model emits 333hp and 480Nm of torque, while the range-topping AMG will produce 525hp and 700Nm of torque.

Summing it

Certainly in this hotly contested category Mercedes have done well to build a good looking car; it’s so easy to mess it up. The interior feels far more inviting than that of the X5, more spacious than the XC90, and more comfortable, if not quite as roomy, than the LR4. They have not flooded the range with too many engine options, and on paper at least, it looks as if the entry ML 400 will do the job just fine.
