Review Summary:

The 2015 is a full-size luxury SUV, but isn't all it’s cracked up to be.

* Proves to be good value for money.

* Rear styling is by far its biggest let-down.

There is something about the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class that isn’t quite right. Something about the back end of the car just makes it look more like a hearse than a luxury SUV. The back rises and rises and then just drops to the tailgate, depriving us of a typical Mercedes swoop. While there are no complaints about the front, sadly it’s the back that lets it down.

Within the cabin of this GL-Class hearse, you will find an array of exotic materials, from two-tone leather to carbon-fiber. The centre console bears two swooshing handrails and there are even carbonfibre tray tables for the rear passengers! It feels like you are sitting in First Class on a flight.

2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class interior

From DVD players in the back to a panoramic sun-roof, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class has been built for the ultimate luxury cruise. It has even been engineered to tackle terrain, although I doubt you’ll see many in the desert.

What’s on offer?

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL 500 churns out 435 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque from its 4.7 litre V8 engine. Channeling power through a 7 speed automatic transmission, the GL 500 accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and on to its 250 km/h top speed. For the power hungry, there’s a GL 63 AMG as well, which will kick out 557 horsepower, 760 Nm of torque, and wipe AED 494,000 out of your bank account.

Summing it

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a big car, a very big car. It’s full of luxury materials and superb features, but I can’t help but feel it is let down by the rear styling. The way the back end just keeps rising then falls off a cliff is very un-Mercedes. For all the goodies you get, the price is actually reasonable, so that’s something. But people will be looking…
