Review Summary:

Based on the C-Class, the GLK is a compact luxury crossover SUV aimed at tackling both off-road terrain and glamorous boulevards alike…but in reality you’ll only it in one of these situations…

Pros

* Equipped with a decent set of features.

Cons

* Not the most striking compact SUV out there.

Looks

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLK is by no means the best looking car to come out of Mercedes. The base is chunky, and the roof too small. One could even suggest that, from the side at least, it looks like a Skoda Yeti. Sure, there are familiar Mercedes odds and ends, like the frontage, but otherwise it is not in keeping with typical German sleekness.

Feels

Inside, the situation improves, and the interior feels more like a Mercedes should. The dials are neat and the dash is arranged to a satisfactory level. It’s smart, if unremarkable.

Engineering

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLK is based on the C-Class, therefore we know that is was built on a solid base. It has been tailored to tackle off-road terrain, and comes with strengthened features to aid that pursuit, such as a sump shield. It has a 3.5 litre engine at its disposal that is capable of attempting the climbing of dunes. It comes with all the features you would expect from a Mercedes.

What’s on offer?

For a compact crossover SUV, a 3.5 litre engine will be more than enough to provide the occasional thrill. Said motor emits 306hp and 370Nm of torque; all for AED 202,000. For the city dwellers there’s a smaller 2.0 litre 4-cylinder on offer as well, pumping out 211 horsepower and a decent 350 Nm of torque.

Summing it…

The GLK finds itself competing with the likes of the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5. Remarkably the GLK is the cheapest of the three. Arguably its styling is on a par with the odd-looking X3, but the Q5, although dull, wins on sleekness. If you want a German made compact SUV then yes, the GLK wouldn’t be a bad choice, especially if you plan on using it as status symbol more than an off-roader. But there are better looking cars out there…
