Review Summary:

Competing against the Germans in an extremely competitive market segment is no mean feat, but for a number of reasons, the RX manages to do it wonderfully.

Pros

* Capacious boot makes for a very practical crossover.

Cons

* Gear lever placed on the dashboard is aesthetically disturbing.

Looks

Competing against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLK, BMW X3 and Audi Q5 in a rather competitive market segment, the 2015 Lexus RX is a luxurious and premium crossover, without being too garish. A bold spindle grille and distinctive LED’s, coupled with arrow head headlights and a beautiful rear end provide the RX with an unmistakable mark of distinction. In F Sport guise, the RX flaunts a revised front bumper with reworked fog lamp housings, mesh in the spindle grille, and a splattering of F Sport emblems inside and out.

Feels

With dashes of wood trim running along the door panels, cup holders, gear shifter and steering wheel, matched by matte aluminium trim that highlights the centre stack, steering wheel hub and glove compartment, the RX surely looks and feels the part of a premium crossover. Leg room and head room for front and rear passengers comes in abundance, along with 1,133 litres of boot space with the 2nd row seats in use.

Engineering

The pre-crash safety system in the 2015 Lexus RX works in a way that if an obstacle is sighted, the system alerts the driver and preloads the brakes for effective stopping. Additionally, it also automatically engages the brakes and tightens seatbelts, if the collision is unavoidable.

What’s on offer?

The 2015 Lexus RX is fitted with a 3.5 litre V6 that is mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission and produces a mediocre 270 horsepower. The F Sport on the other hand is equipped with the same engine but is fitted with two extra cogs, making it an 8 speed automatic transmission. The hybrid variant, however, is the most powerful of the bunch as it produces an impressive combined 295 horsepower from the engine and electric motors.

Summing it…

In a competitive market segment, the Lexus RX has enough to stand out. With a price tag ranging from AED 179,000 – AED 257,000, it’s definitely worth considering if you’re in the market for a crossover. There’s a reason you’ll always see so many more RX’s on the road than any of its competitors after all.
