Review Summary:

Dig up the topic of muscle cars in front of a bunch of motoring enthusiasts and the Mustang is in all likelihood one of the first names that you will hear. Roaming the streets since 1964 and working its way through five generations of production, the 2015 Mustang is rather special as it’s the first model to carry the iconic nameplate into its sixth generation.

Pros

* Power output from the 2.3 litre 4-cylinder engine is simply brilliant.

Cons

* Exterior design requires some getting used to.

Looks

Widened by 1.5 inches and lowered by 1.4 inches, the 2015 Ford Mustang is dimensionally and stylistically different to Mustangs of the past. Featuring an aggressively sculpted hood, a trapezoidal grille, and headlights that follow the contour of Amy Winehouse’s mascara, the sixth gen Mustang was accused of swapping its macho appeal for a more feminine one and I’m not sure if I fully disagree with that.

Feels

Retro with a splash of modernity, the 2015 Ford Mustang hasn’t lost what made its ancestors ever so desirable. With a silver beam dividing the dashboard into two sections and stitched leather adorning the centre console, it’s toggle switches, a thick steering wheel, and a well put together interior that strike just the right balance.

Engineering

Track Apps – a feature on the 2015 Ford Mustang that brings with it Electronic Line-Lock and launch control.  While Electronic Line-Lock keeps the front brakes locked to enable warming of the rear tires, launch control integrates the brakes, traction control, and powertrain control to help ensure smooth, consistent starts every single time.

What’s on offer?

Not sure if it was the fact that the 2015 Ford Mustang would come with a turbocharger or a 4-cylinder engine that scared petrolheads more. Yet it’s not all bad, for the 2.3 litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine pushes out 314 horsepower and 434 Nm of torque, which just so happens to be 14 horsepower and 54 Nm of torque more than the naturally aspirated 3.7 litre V6 is able to generate. For the die-hard enthusiasts, there’s a 5.0 litre V8 which accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds as well.

Summing it…

With years of heritage and a loyal following, the Mustang is one of the most well known muscle cars around and for good reason. Although the 2015 model isn’t everyone’s cup of tea from a design perspective, there’s no denying what they’ve been able to achieve from the 2.3 litre engine is simply phenomenal. We may be seeing smaller engines in our Mustangs from hereon, but at least we’ll still be seeing Mustangs, eh?
