Review Summary:

The 2015 is the brand's Hollywood bad guy. It is the rogue of the range, far more powerful and deadly than any other. It would take more than Sigourney Weaver and a flame thrower to tame it.

Pros

* Flawless interior reminds you why you need deep pockets to have the R8 parked in your driveway.

Cons

* Marginal differences in the V8 and V10 variant command a steep price hike.

Looks

Why change an award-winning design? With the rear diffuser and trademark side blades now coming in carbon fiber as standard, the R8 is even more pleasing to look at. The R8 looks like it wants to spark fear into and eat other road users; and it will.

Feels

When you sit in the R8 you are reminded that the car came from a successful Le Mans prototype. You are cocooned within a cockpit, and everything from the dials to the gear lever carries with it a racing pedigree that will make you want to park on the start line at Dubai Autodrome; and then bury your right foot.

Engineering

The 2015 Audi R8 V10 Plus has been fitted with more carbon fibre, which can be found just about everywhere. But because of the heavier V10 engine, the unladen weight is 10kg heavier than the 4.2 V8. The R8’s old gearbox was not popular with road testers, and mercifully Audi has now rectified the problem. The R8 now comes with a 7-speed dual clutch S Tronic gearbox, which will result in quicker and smoother gear changes.

On offer

The 2015 Audi R8 is available with three engines, with the 4.2 FSI Quattro 6 speed manual being the cheapest at AED 405,000, and the all new V10 plus 5.2 FSI Quattro crowning the price list at a massive AED 595,000. It produces 550 horsepower and will get you from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds. But are you going to want to pay AED 165,000 more for the V10 Plus when it will only give you an extra 15km/h, will get you from 0-100kph 1.1s quicker, and you’ll still be 10kg heavier?

Verdict

The R8 is a brilliant car. It is the smart man’s , in that you will be able to drive it up to speed humps without the need to put scaffold planks down first to get over them. The R8 V10 Plus is an expensive option; but if you can afford it then no one will laugh at you, in fact, they’ll fear you. It is a Hollywood bad guy, not only does it look like Ridley Scott’s “Alien”, but it behaves like it as well: it only wants to wipe everything else out.
