Review Summary:

The A1 is the German marque's attempt to tap into the market. Though it is one of the best looking hatchbacks your money can buy, the price tag doesn't seem fully justified.

Pros

Exterior styling is sure to turn heads.

Cons

Price tag doesn't seem fully justified.

Looks

The 2015 Audi A1 steers away from regular hatchbacks in a number of ways. Not only is it one of the best looking hatchbacks on sale today, but it is also one that a man would not be ashamed of driving around town. The determined looking mug of the A1 is composed of a massive grille up front and angular headlights that connote the German hatchback means serious business. Nearly every aspect of the exterior including the roof lining and roof dome can be customized to suit personal preferences.

Feels

Available as a three or five door hatchback, the 2015 Audi A1 is seen as a stylish yet practical offering. Unlike the exterior, the dashboard of the A1 is bland and lacks the Audi flare found in other models. Rear seat passengers are likely to benefit from previous acrobatic experiences as not only is getting into the rear seats a challenge, but once there, moving your head and arms freely is outright impossible.

Engineering

Fuel saver technologies that can be found on the A1 include a start-stop and recuperation system. While the start stop system helps reduce fuel consumption by switching off the engine at stationary phases, the recuperation system converts the kinetic energy into usable electrical energy when the vehicle is coasting or braking. Keeping up with the youth segment the A1 is targeted towards, the intelligent hatchback packs in a Wi-Fi hotspot, Google maps and access to global radio stations via smart phone apps.

What’s on offer?

The 2015 Audi A1 is equipped with a 1.4 litre turbocharged unit that produces 122 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. Mated to a 7 speed S tronic transmission, the A1 accelerates to a 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds. For the slightly more performance inclined, there is a beefed up version of the same engine that produces 185 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. It hits the tonne in 6.9 seconds and boasts of top speed of 227 km/h.

Summing it…

The 2015 Audi A1 is similar to a Jack Russell Terrier. Though it looks small and harmless, it means serious business and has got what it takes to stand proudly in front of its competition. With prices ranging from AED 90,400 to AED 131,000, the A1 definitely isn’t a cheap hatchback to flaunt in your driveway.
