Review Summary:

The Terios is a Mini-SUV that replaced its Rocky predecessor over a decade ago in 1998. Currently in its second generation, the Terios is a massive improvement from the first generation model and puts on its game face to take on Nissan’s Juke and Suzuki’s Jimny.

Pros

Spacious enough for a small family who wish to tread into SUV territory.

Cons

With just one engine on offer, customers don't really have a choice even if they'd like a bigger unit under the hood.

Looks

With its diminutive grille, almond-like headlamps and wrap around tail lamps, there’s no denying the 2015 Daihatsu Terios is a lot more pleasing to look at, compared to Nissan’s comical joke, sorry, Juke. On the other hand, though the spare tire bolted onto the boot lid may connote that the Terios has an adventurous side to it, it’s still a long way off from looking, or being, as off-road capable as Suzuki’s Jimny.

Feels

Sticking to the bare essentials, the 2015 Daihatsu Terios features a simplistic dashboard that comprises of a fair bit of hard plastics and doesn’t exactly fall into the ‘modern category’. With a high mounted radio unit and rotary A/C controls being the most technologically advanced features in the vehicle, it does come off as slightly archaic compared to its rivals who deal with touch screen infotainment systems and the works.

Engineering

Nestled under the speed-o-metre, resides a small multi-information display. Presenting a range of information, the driver can utilize a ‘mode’ switch to toggle between displays and decide if they want to view information pertaining to the time, average fuel consumption, maximum travelling range or outside temperature.

What’s on offer?

Powered by a 1.5 litre 4-cylinder engine, the 2015 Daihatsu Terios puts out 103 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 140 Nm of torque at 4,400 RPM, all while being mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. With a top speed of 160 km/h, the 2WD version completes the 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 13.0 seconds, while it takes the heavier 4WD variant a whole second longer.

Verdict

The Nissan Juke isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and I fully understand if you disregarded it as being your next potential vehicle from the very beginning. But let’s say you’re in a dilemma and are struggling to make up your mind between the Daihatsu Terios and Suzuki Jimny, then it’s a lot simpler than you might think. Bearing a lower price tag and being properly capable off-road, opting for the Suzuki Jimny is a no-brainer. Unless of course, you’re after space, then you’re better off with the not-so-handsome Terios…
