Review Summary:

There is nothing new for the trusty old Defender this year, as sadly it will cease production soon. Enjoy it while you still can.

Pros

Vintage styling
engineering

Cons

Steep price tag
Soon to be discontinued

Looks

The 2015 Defender is simple, mechanical engineering at its finest. For nearly 70 years the 4×4 has barely changed, and it has proved the inspiration for countless others. Traditional circular headlamps sit at the front of what is basically a large, steel box. It looks like what it is meant to be; a bread and butter, trail-chaser.

Feels

The rule book for modern interior has been thrown out the window, and while in any other car this would be reason to pour scorn upon it, all feels right in the Defender. There are no fancy LED’s, no leather seats, no fancy infotainment system, it’s just functional, all-you-need interior. It feels right.

Engineering

This car is designed to go off road, tow heavy loads, and last a life-time. It is therefore engineered to be as tough as possible. These days the Defender comes with ABS, traction control, and heavy duty suspension. Everything in the Defender is manual, with the exception of the front windows. It’s engineered to be a proper, raw-knuckle car.

What’s on offer?

There are two body-type variations on offer, with the short Defender 90 costing AED 170,000 and the 20-inch longer Defender 110 starting at AED 180,000. Being longer, the 110 comes with seven seats and extra doors and side steps, whereas the 90 will only come in a four-seat configuration. At 75 litres, the fuel tank is 15 litres larger on the 110 than the 90. A 2.2 litre diesel engine is fitted as standard, which emits 120hp, 360Nm of torque, and accelerates from static to 100kp/h in a diesel-esque 17.0 seconds.

Summing it

The Defender is not long for this world, and after nearly 70 years in production is due to be retired soon. If you love old-school off-roaders that are built like tanks, then you will love the Defender. But AED 170,000 is an awful lot of money for a car that lacks a whole load of fancy features. With a price tag that is combined with impending retirement, it looks as if the Defender will just quietly fade away. Such a shame…
