Review Summary:

If you're looking for a on a budget, look no further than the 2015 Zelas.

Pros

Priced well, the Zelas is able to attract those looking for a Coupe on a budget.

Cons

Interior quality is best described as shoddy.

Looks

Prior to the Toyota 86, the Zelas was Toyota’s sub AED 100k sports coupe. Whether it was due to its price tag, front wheel drive platform, or slightly strange design, the Zelas never quite caught on. However, it’s been brought back for 2015 and proudly flaunts its coupe physique. Only available in Sport trim, the 2015 model showcases neat headlights and taillights, a slim upper grille, a colossal hexagonal lower grille and artificial plastic inserts in its bumpers to add to its sporting pretensions. The bodywork on the Zelas is composed of numerous sharp lines, curves, and bulges in all the right places; yet it isn’t something you’d glance twice at.

Feels

The Zelas is the cheapest Toyota coupe on sale, and quite frankly, it feels it too. With hard plastics across the door panels, centre console and dashboard, along with dated A/C controls and an extremely simplistic radio system, it’s hard to describe the Zelas as anything apart from economical. The silver lining to this otherwise rather grey cloud, is the fact that the 2015 Toyota Zelas is equipped with rear seats that can actually accommodate average sized adults, unlike its 86 sibling.

Engineering

Though nothing revolutionary in terms of equipment, the Zelas is equipped with Push Start ignition, indicators integrated into the side mirrors, cruise control and paddle shifters. Just like other Toyota’s, safety hasn’t been ignored on the Zelas. Driver and passenger airbags along with knee, side and curtain airbags are all present to protect those within the cabin should there be an accident.

What’s on offer?

The 2015 Toyota Zelas packs in a 2.5 litre engine that is good for 178 horsepower and 233 Nm of torque. Mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission, the Zelas arrives at a 100 km/h from a standstill in a mildly impressive 7.6 seconds.

Summing it…

The 2015 Toyota Zelas is as sporty as Chess is dangerous. Just like one of its biggest competitors the Hyundai Veloster, the Zelas is likely to be found interesting by those who place vehicle appearance significantly higher than vehicle performance. Personally, I’d rather save a little more and drive away in a Toyota 86…
