Review Summary:

The 2015 is a great looking SUV and, being a Toyota, it will certainly be a tough old dog. But with the latest version there is a sense that it is moving away from its off-road intentions to become a more family orientated work horse.

Pros

Reasonably priced.
Well designed inside and out.

Cons

Lost its rugged exterior appeal.

Looks

The 2015 Toyota RAV4 is a great looking car, make no mistake. It is sharp and pointy at both ends which gives it a determined expression. Its front is angry-looking, with the leading edge of the bonnet pointing down over its frowning countenance. There are sharp mouldings that run from the front wheel arches to the rear clusters, acting as a warning to other motorists that they should keep their distance. Around the back, however, the spare wheel is missing. It now sits under the floor, implying that it’s more for day-to-day use rather than for off-road exploring.

Feels

The sharp and pointy design is continued on the inside. Everything has a pronounced sharp edge, and when seated there is a genuine sense that you are in a car with a bit of bite. There is a beam-like runner that runs from the centre console, up and around the dials and across to the door which looks fantastic, and the radio is fitted within a tidy parapet. The steering wheel is chunky, and when you hold it, you will be reassured that you are at the wheel of a strong car.

Engineering

The RAV4 comes with sport mode and dynamic torque control 4WD, which simply explained means that it senses steering input and adjusts power distribution accordingly to combat understeer and oversteer. For a car that, aesthetically speaking, seems to have moved away from the 4×4 scene, there are a lot of off-road options available. It comfortably seats five people and leaves plenty of luggage space.

What’s on offer?

The basic 2015 Toyota RAV4 starts at AED 81,500 and comes with a 2.5 litre engine that produces a decent 176 horsepower. The basic model comes with everything you would expect; from electric windows to dual airbags. But to take full advantage of the 4WD options you’ll need to spend closer to AED 102,500,000. The top of the range model is priced at AED 125,000.

Summing it…

The 2015 Toyota RAV4 is a breath of fresh air for the Toyota off-road range. It is one of the better looking cars in its class, and with the base model being the price it is, it is reasonable as well. The absence of the spare wheel on the tailgate suggests that Toyota expects this car to spend more time taking children to school than going off-road chasing sand dunes. You would be smart to own one.

      Hi Deebu,

The RAV4 isn’t a bad car by any means, but have you considered what the rivals have to offer? It may be worthwhile having a look at the Nissan X-Trail and Mazda CX-5.
