Review Summary:

The WRX STI – a rally legend’s weapon of choice and an amateur petrolhead’s dream.

Pros

* Phenomenal performance delivered from its 2.5 litre turbocharged engine.

Cons

* Interior and exterior designs aren't exactly appealing.

Looks

Taut headlamps, a cavernous hood scoop, and protruding lines in the bodywork, come together to give the WRX STI a rather aggressive mien. Unlike the previous generation model, the brawny, macho appeal of the 2015 Subaru WRX STI fades away from the fender rearward. Opting for softer curves, it’s a design that definitely requires some getting used to.

Feels

Unmistakably Subaru, the interior of the 2015 WRX STI is home to faux carbon fiber, a central display screen atop the dashboard, and an instrument cluster that illuminates in a fiery red hue. Although it’s neat and the flat-bottom steering is a welcomed addition, the Jap doesn’t earn too many points as far as innovation is concerned.

Engineering

Standard on the WRX STI are Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and Active Torque Vectoring. Reducing understeer significantly, the systems work in conjunction with stiffer unibody anchors and an upgraded suspension, to deliver greater maneuverability and up to 0.96g of lateral acceleration.

What’s on offer?

Squeezing out 300 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 407 Nm of torque at 4,000 RPM from its 2.5 litre horizontally opposed turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the 2015 Subaru WRX STI gets mated to a 6 speed manual transmission and demolishes a 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 4.8 seconds.

Summing it…

The Subaru WRX STI has always been pitched against the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. However, ever since Mitsubishi has pulled the plug on the Evo, the Subaru has become the segment winner by default. While the interior and exterior of the WRX STI seem like a half-arsed job of the overconfident designers, I can still picture myself owning one, just for the performance it offers.
