Review Summary:

The started its life in early 1997 as a compact crossover and has evolved over time into something a little bigger; a mid-size crossover. Currently in its fourth generation, it goes up against the likes of the American Ford Escape and Korean Hyundai Tucson.

Pros

Neat dashboard layout.

Cons

Highly overpriced for what it brings to the table.

Looks

The 2015 Subaru Forester sports a hexagonal grille, a protruding centre section on its hood and subtle contours along the length of its body. Though not revolting, it is clear that the styling isn’t the mid-size crossover’s strongest point.

Feels

There’s something particularly Subaru-arian about the interior. The way the hood extends over the central A/C vents and houses a small navigation system, there’s no confusing it with an offering from any other manufacturer out there. Flaunting the capacity to seat 5 individuals, the Forester also boasts an impressive 422 litres of cargo space with the seats up, which extends to a whopping 1,481 litres once the rear seats have been stowed away.

Engineering

Subaru’s Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames have not only helped Subaru reach world-class levels of collision safety, but also reduce weight at the same time. By mastering edge welding techniques on centre pillars and front frame support members, the Forester is one mid-size crossover that cocoons you and your passengers in a field of protection against collisions from any direction.

On offer

Under its hood, the 2015 Subaru Forester houses a 2.5 litre horizontally opposed 4 cylinder engine that produces 172 horsepower and 229 Nm of torque, while being mated to a CVT transmission. Two variants of the Forester are available and depending on how high you wish to climb the spec ladder, prices range from AED 107,000 to AED 115,000.

Verdict

If you’re on a tight budget, then the Hyundai Tucson seems like a better bet, simply because it allows you to save some money and drive home a better looking car. However, if budget isn’t an issue, then nothing comes close to the Ford Escape as far as features go, and it costs roughly the same. So why exactly should you buy the Forester again? Well, you shouldn’t.
