Review Summary:

It's back, bigger and stronger than ever.

Pros

* Capacious and comfortable interior.

Cons

* Heated steering wheel and heated 2nd row seats are completely unnecessary in this part of the world.

Looks

Rough, tough and orthogonal, are adjectives you’d use when describing the previous generation model, but come 2015 and that image has been bartered for one of sophistication and maturity. While an extensive grille and two-tier projector-beam headlamps adorn the frontal section, the generous use of chrome along the window lining and side mirrors complement the ruler-straight contours that run the length of the vehicle.

Feels

It’s true, the American’s really do like everything king sized; hop into the 2015 Tahoe and there’s all the proof you need. While there’s ample amounts of leather and soft touch materials around the cabin, wood trim spans across the centre console and door panels to give the SUV from Detroit that slightly superior, slightly upmarket feel.

Engineering

While the centre mounted 8-inch display on the dashboard slides up at the touch of a button to reveal a secret compartment to hook up a phone, or iPod to the entertainment system, rear seat passengers don’t have to feel left out, as they are entrusted with one rear roof-mounted screen in the Tahoe and two roof-mounted screens in the Tahoe’s larger sibling.

What’s on offer?

Under the hood of the Tahoe, resides a 5.3 litre ECOTEC3 V8 engine that produces 355 horsepower at 5,600 RPM and 518 Nm of torque at 4,100 RPM. Mated to a 6 speed transmission, the American SUV’s provide a smooth and quiet ride once at cruising speeds, but getting up there, could take longer than expected.

Summing it…

In the eyes of Chevrolet, the Tahoe goes up against local favourites such as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol, but in actuality, they can’t really be compared. Because while the Nissan Patrol demands a steeper price tag, it delivers with a 7 speed transmission and an engine that puts out 45 horsepower more. On the other hand, the Land Cruiser too, packs a slightly stronger punch and would probably annihilate the American SUV on a set of dunes. So what does the Tahoe really have going for it? Space, and a lot of it.
