2015 Chevrolet Malibu | new car review
* Aggressive front end.
* Camaro inspired rear lights.
* Plastic inserts that look like A/C vents in the dashboard and door panels ruin the charm.
From 1997 until 2012, the Malibu was dull. So dull, that I’m certain nobody used the adjective ‘striking’ to describe it. Thankfully, that’s not the case with the 2015 model. The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu wears large wrap around headlamps, an even larger chrome outlined grille, sizable five spoke wheels, and boy, is it striking!
The Malibu follows simplistic designs with wood trim along the centre console and door panels, while the central A/C vents, multimedia screen, and controls are neatly placed into what some would call a large capsule. With soft leather accompanied by white stitching on the armrest, seats, and door panels, along with sufficient head and leg room, there isn’t anything to really crib about. Oh, apart from the odd plastic strips running along the dashboard and door panels that look like A/C vents, that is.
The centrepiece of the car’s cabin is the 7-inch multimedia screen that is used to play music, view the navigation system, and show the driver a view of what’s at the back with the rear-view camera. But none of that will send your jaw to the floor; up until you realize, the multimedia screen slides up, to reveal a secret compartment. Quite handy before dropping the car off at valet, really. Features such as headlamp washers, dual exhaust pipes, 9 speakers, a roof mounted antenna and an auto dimming rear view mirror aren’t available on the base or LT version, and are reserved for the top of the line LTZ.
What’s on offer?
The 2.4 litre engine fitted in the base 2014 Chevrolet Malibu sends 167 horsepower and 225 Nm of torque through a 6 speed transmission to the front wheels. The larger 3.0 litre unit coughs up 263 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque, but is still mated to the same 6 speed autobox.
A stunning mug, coupled with styling inspired by a Camaro for the rear, and a well put together interior. As far as aesthetics go, the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is flawless. But with the Koreans offering similarly equipped vehicles, such as Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima with a significantly lower starting price, the Chevrolet Malibu does feel a tad overpriced.
