Review Summary:

It all began in 2011 when Hyundai decided to challenge the status quo and produce a rather comical looking vehicle that adopted the style of a coupe yet offered the functionality of a .

Pros

* Impressive amount of standard equipment.
* Priced well in line with the competition.

Cons

* It reminds us of the idiom, all show and no go.

Looks

From the exterior, there’s just one word to describe the 2015 : quirky. Apart from the fact that it sports non-functional air vents on the hood and has one door on the driver’s side while two on the passenger side, the only dose of normality is found with the panoramic sunroof and LED headlamp clusters  which adorn the Korean hatchback.

Feels

Trying its level best to provide a sporty cabin, the 2015 Hyundai Veloster welcomes well bolstered seats with printed seatbacks, a manual shifting option, and a pair of aluminium pedals, but don’t read too deeply into it, for it is all merely only aesthetic value. While occupants in the front are reasonably comfortable, the lack of rear A/C vents, combined with pathetic headroom and a fixed glass panel over their head all times, is sure to keep rear seat occupants grumbling nearly a whole trip through.

Engineering

Being a Hyundai, the Veloster is very well equipped as far as tech is concerned. Standard equipment includes Cruise Control, AUX and USB ports, steering wheel controls, fog lamps, push button ignition, leather upholstery, and a power adjustable driver’s seat. For those willing to dish out more, they can expect to receive cooled and heated front seats, an auto defogger, and a navigation system.

What’s on offer?

Under the hood of the Korean hatchback resides a 1.6 litre 4-cylinder engine which gets mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission and kicks out a decent 128 horsepower at 6,300 RPM and 157 Nm of torque at 4,850 RPM. While it’s claimed to reach a 100 km/h in 11.5 seconds, we’d recommend taking that claim with a pinch of salt.

Summing it…

Quite simply then, in spite of the Veloster having aluminium pedals, a manual shift option and an engine that revs up to 6,500 RPM, it is clearly not a car that is meant to be driven hard, or fast. Targeted at the youth, the Veloster is more of a trendy city runabout than the sporty hot hatch its exterior suggests.
