Review Summary:

’s newest small SUV is based on the highly successful Fiesta. So that would mean they’ve got another winner on their hands, only this time in SUV form, right? Well, sort of. You get a lot of car for your money, but at a price. The Indian built 2014 Ecosport is primarily aimed at budget conscious customers and is ’s attempt to dethrone the hugely successful Renault Duster.

Pros

Filled with features for a car that falls into this particular segment of the market.

Cons

Interior quality and materials aren't of the highest standards.

Looks

The 2014 Ford EcoSport seems a little lost while trying to look aggressive with a sculpted bonnet, headlights that seem to frown and a spare tyre that is mounted outside the side opening rear door. The short overhangs, ridiculously small alloys and tall stance of the car end up making it look cute, rather than aggressive.

Feels

Reasonably comfortable for up to four individuals, the cabin of the 2014 Ford EcoSport isn’t the most spacious place to be, but will suffice for most journeys and is matched by boot space that measure 346 litres with the second row seats in use, and 705 litres when stowed away. Although unmistakable Ford styling is present across the dashboard and centre stack, the remote A/C vents at either end of the dashboard are in dire need of a redesign, as they look like they’ve slipped off-centre in the design process.

Engineering

For a that is targeted towards the budget conscious types, the 2014 Ford EcoSport is surprisingly well equipped. Leatherette on the seats, an MP3 compatible stereo with AUX and Bluetooth inputs, front and side airbags, steering wheel mounted controls, cruise control, keyless go, climate control and rear parking sensors!

What’s on offer?

Under the tiny hood is a 4 cylinder 1.5 litre engine that is good for 109 horsepower @ 6,300 RPM, 142 Nm @ 4,200 RPM and is small enough to fit on an A4 sized sheet of paper. In today’s automotive world, those are embarrassingly low numbers, but then again the 2014 Ford EcoSport is a featherweight at just 1,200 kilograms. Paired to a 6 speed automatic, the EcoSport is a decently efficient vehicle and will cover 100 kilometres in exchange for around 8 litres of gasoline.

Summing it…

At a starting price of AED 60,000 (AED 67,000 for the automatic transmission) the 2014 Ford Ecosport definitely gets your attention. That is a lot of car for little money. For consumers on a budget, it is a no-brainer. However, once you select all the options, the price goes up to AED 80,000 and at that price, the build quality somehow does not feel acceptable.
