Review Summary:

The epitome of refinement from the Korean brand, the is a full size luxury vehicle that serves as the brand’s flagship sedan and is believed to be inspired by older generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class models. With the “W” in its name signifying World Class, the Chairman W is a promising offering, on paper at least.

Pros

Significantly cheaper than Hyundai's Centennial flagship sedan that packs in similar features and a similar powertrain.

Cons

Positioning of the brand in the market will prevent buyers from spending AED 220,000 for the long wheelbase version.

Looks

Looking the part of a luxury sedan, the Chairman W receives a large chrome grille, acicular headlamps that resemble the fifth generation S-Class, a hood ornament in the form of the brand’s Twin Dragon insignia and swooping C-Pillars that simply integrate into the rear end of the vehicle ever so seamlessly. Hop up a level to the long wheelbase version and a significant bump of 300mm in the length of the vehicle proves that even when stretched, the 2014 SsangYong Chairman W looks rather dignified.

Feels

Altering perceptions of what Korean luxury is all about; the Chairman W is home to a curvaceous dashboard, an abundance of soft leather, reclining rear seats, electronic head restraints and is completed by plenty of maple wood trim along the steering, dashboard and centre console. While some may be of the opinion that the Chairman W could never match European benchmarks of luxury, the truth is that the Korean sedan is surprisingly good!

Engineering

With no shortage of tech in the flagship Korean sedan, SsangYong has gone to extreme lengths to make the Chairman W truly stand out. In addition to a suede roof liner, electronically controlled suspension system and Harman Kardon audio system, the 2014 SsangYong Chairman W is equipped with an Adaptive Cruise Control system, which is sure to make cruises along the highway a lot easier since acceleration and braking are both taken care of by the vehicle.

What’s on offer?

Two engine choices are up on offer; a 3.2 litre in-line 6-cylinder and a larger 5.0 litre V8. While the former chucks out a measly 225 horsepower at 6,600 RPM and 296 Nm of torque at 4,600 RPM, the latter packs in a much stronger punch. Whipping out 306 horsepower at 5,600 RPM and 441 Nm of torque at 4,000 RPM, the latter sends its power through a 7 speed Mercedes-Benz transmission to propel the 2.5 tonne Korean sedan to its 245 km/h top speed.

Summing it…

As a fair competitor to Hyundai’s Centennial flagship sedan, you’d expect the prices of the two Korean sedans to be lined. However, here’s the shocking part; while the Chairman W could very well match the Centennial feature for feature, it costs a whopping AED 119,000 less! With a price tag that starts at AED 155,000 and swells to AED 220,000, the 2014 SsangYong Chairman W offers value like never seen before.
