Review Summary:

The CX-9 is a full-size crossover SUV that has been around since 2006 and is built on the same platform as the Ford Edge. Going up against the Chevrolet Traverse, the Japanese SUV has an advantage, in the aesthetic department, at least.


Striking exterior design and spacious interior.


It isn't as powerful as its American rival.


Still in its first generation, the Mazda CX-9 is a product of continuous styling tweaks that has seen the SUV transform from an outright sleeper in 2006, into an outright stunner in 2014. Sporting the brand’s trademark grille, a set of new headlamps, smoked tail lamps and bumpers to boot, the Mazda CX-9 steals the spotlight from its American rival, like a prettier friend does at a party.

Pull open the door and the only words that come to mind are, spacious, roomy and airy. While there is more than enough room to seat seven individuals and their belongings in the 490 litre boot, the overall design of the cabin, isn’t the best in the Mazda range. The vertically blessed individuals that suffer with legroom or even headroom in other vehicles, would be delighted to know that the second row seats not only recline, but physically move back as well, increasing space at the simple tug of a lever.

Determined to offer driver’s with a sportier experience, the engineers at Mazda have fitted the 2014 Mazda CX-9 with a 6-speed Sport automatic transmission, which combines the extra control and fun of a manual-shift mode with the smooth-shifting convenience of an automatic transmission.

Residing under the bonnet is a Ford sourced, 3.7 litre V6 engine that whips out 273 horsepower at 6,250 RPM and 366 Nm of torque at 4,250 RPM. Delivering power through an All-Wheel-Drive layout, the 2014 Mazda CX-9 completes a 0 – 100 km/h run in a smidgen over 8 seconds, before continuing to its 160 km/h top speed.

If you’ve narrowed your options down to the Chevrolet Traverse and Mazda CX-9, with the intentions of having one parked up your driveway soon, then it may be sooner than you expected. The reason I say this, is because you won’t have to jump from showroom to showroom in doubt of which of the two is better; the Mazda, clearly has the edge in this battle. With a nicer outer shell, backed up a better interior and a lower price tag, you can’t go wrong with the 2014 Mazda CX-9.
