Review Summary:

The 2 has been in production since 1996 and while it may look its best in third generation finery, it has also won the coveted Word Car of the Year award. Going up against America’s beloved Ford Fiesta, the Japanese 2014 2 trades blow for blow.

In form, the Mazda2 is cheaper, better looking and quicker than its American rival.

The design and quality of the interior is a major letdown.

Judging the exterior of the car is in all likelihood, the most subjective part of any review. However, with the Mazda2, there is a general consensus that not many people would willingly flaunt their ride if they owned the supremely unappealing sedan variant. On the other hand, the way the ascending window line and wrap around tail lights, compliment the oval headlamps and rear spoiler of the hatchback, there’s not much to say, except, “ it may look small, but it surely ranks high on the aesthetic scale”.

Housing four circular A/C vents and archaic temperature controls, while a splash of piano black trim tries to liven things up, the dashboard in the Japanese supermini isn’t the nicest in the industry.  As opposed to the cabin of the Ford Fiesta, (which is nirvana to a technophile) the 2014 Mazda2 comes off as a cassette player at an MP3 convention.

Safety is of utmost importance, be it with a small car or a larger one. So you can only imagine how pleasantly surprising it is to discover, that the Mazda2 isn’t just equipped with front airbags, but side and curtain airbags as well. In addition to the airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners and load-limiters work together to prevent injuries in a collision.

On offer

Powered by a 1.5 litre inline 4 cylinder engine, the 2014 Mazda2 churns out 102 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 135Nm of torque at 4,000 RPM. Mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission, the engine sends power to the front wheels and allows the Mazda2 to charge through the air and reach the 100 km/h mark in a not-so-quick 12.0 seconds.

Though they may seem like fair competitors in the beginning, there’s a clear winner between the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta. Strutting a price tag that is AED 16,000 less than its American counterpart, while being quicker to reach the 100 km/h marker as well, the 2014 Mazda2 is the deserving champion at the Value for Money Games.
