Review Summary:

The 2014 is like a Fiesta in heels. Packing in decent features and an impressive amount of space, it's not a bad package. But it will need to lot more to dethrone the extremely successful Renault Duster.

Loaded with features, surprisingly roomy.

Plasticky interior, overall feel of the car is cheap.

Introduction & Summary

Ford’s newest small SUV is based on the highly successful supermini Fiesta. So that would mean they’ve got another winner on their hands, only this time in SUV form. Right? Well, sort of. You get a lot of car for your money, but at a price. The Indian built 2014 Ford Ecosport is primarily aimed at budget conscious customers and is Ford’s attempt to dethrone the hugely successful Renault Duster. Renault should be worried.

Styling & Design

Styling in this segment has always been questionable. With the target segment being young folks, designers tend to use a bit more of the fun element in the design brief which results in slightly polarised looks more often than not. The 2014 Ford Ecosport seems a little lost while trying to look aggressive with an aggressive bonnet, headlights that seem to have frown a bit and a spare tyre that is mounted outside to side opening rear door. The short overhangs, ridiculously small alloys and tall stance of the car ends up making it look more cute rather than aggressive. Lets just say the styling isn’t its strongest point.

This is where the 2014 Ford Ecosport really shines. For a small budget , it is packed with options. Our test car was the Titanium variant which comes with all the options available on the car. The seats were covered in leatherette, while there were surprisingly large number of cup and bottle holders for such a small car. There is an MP3 compatible stereo with AUX and bluetooth inputs, front and side airbags, steering wheel mounted controls, cruise control, keyless go, climate control and sensors. The angular dash has an overload of buttons with a basic monochrome LCD screen for the infotainment readouts and parking sensors. The interior is lined with hard plastics everywhere and has more gaps than you would expect. The cabin feels very cheap, although it did feel solid.

Performance, Ride & Handling

Under the tiny hood is a 4 cylinder 1.5 Liter engine that is good for 109 hp @ 6300 RPM and 142 Nm @ 4200 RPM and is small enough to fit on an A4 sized sheet of paper. How about that! In today’s automotive world, those are embarrassingly low numbers but then again the 2014 Ford Ecosport is a featherweight at 1200 kilograms. Paired to a 6 speed automatic, the Ecosport loves to rev. Cruising around town is fairly comfortable and the lack of power is not much of an issue. Get on to the highway however and you really have to mash the loud pedal to get anywhere. The narrow but thick 205/60/R16 tyres offer decent grip while the ride was acceptable. Engine drone and wind noise is apparent when on the highway but that is something we expected. Available only as a FWD model, you dare not venture into anything more than dirt tracks. Although nowhere close to the claimed fuel consumption of 6.5L/100 km, we were around the 8.5L/100 km mark, which is not bad thanks to the puny engine and lightweight body.

Comfort & Practicality

For a car that is this small the 2014 Ford Ecosport has plenty of space on the inside. There is enough room to seat 4 adults while the boot space could be a little better.

The compact size of the car means maneuvering the car in the old parts of town is a breeze. In all the time we had the car, we didn’t find one parking spot that couldn’t accommodate the tiny Ecosport. The side hinged rear door however, can be a bit of a pain in tight spots.

Overall, as a city car it fits the bill.

Price & Verdict

At a starting price of AED 60,000 (AED 67,000 for the automatic transmission) the 2014 Ford Ecosport definitely gets your attention. That is a lot of car for little money. For consumers on a budget, it is a no-brainer. However, once you select all the options, the price goes up to AED 80,000 (our test model) and at that price the build quality somehow does not feel acceptable. It is a trade off really, either go with a well built European mini SUV with little or no options or a fully optioned Ecosport with tacky interiors.
