Review Summary:

The long-awaited is finally here, and Auto Middle East has driven it! It drives as good as it looks, but then it is the world’s first Sports-SUV!

Pros

Great looks, great handler, performance features

Cons

Turbo variant feels underpowered, limited standard features

Looks

The 2014 Porsche Macan is a great looking car, with the bulk of its design taken from its big brother; the Cayenne. The front arrangement has been sharpened up and given some mean-looking fins, and the back slopes elegantly like a Cayman. Arguably Porsche could have tried something different, but perhaps sticking to a tried and tested design was a good idea for the first generation.

Feels

Porsche market the Macan as the world’s first and only Sports, Sports Utility Vehicle, which may sound a bit strange. But when you sit inside you begin to see why. The high centre console and high door ledges surround the low driving position, making you feel that you are indeed sitting in a low-slung coupe. You’ll find it hard not to smile.

Engineering

The Macan comes with all sorts of tricks which allow it to work well both on and off road. Sports Plus mode firms the suspension up so that you can corner with 911-like poise, and the optional air suspension, which raises 40mm, means that off-road obstacles can be tackled with ease.

What’s on offer?

You can choose between the Macan S and the Macan Turbo. The Turbo comes with more features as standard, but if you read our recent road test you will see that the S is a better package. The Turbo is relatively under-powered, a smart man would buy the S and kit it out with options. Prices start at AED 258,000 for the S and AED 349,000 for the Turbo.

Summing it…

As stated, the Macan is a good car, and will prove popular with its target audience; mid-20’s to mid-30’s professionals, maybe with a child. It’s sporty and stylish, crisp and comfortable. The S model would be the more sensible option, as the money you’d save on not buying a Turbo would allow you to kit it out with lots of goodies.
