Dodge unveils the 2015 Charger and Challenger at New York Auto Show

The Charger and Challenger are more than just cars, they are representations and statements about passion, performance and the company’s heritage; according to Richard Cox, the brand’s director, that is. So when both of these legends undergo surgery at the same time, it’s a pretty big deal. The 2015 Challenger has walked out of the operation theatre looking more like it’s 1971 predecessor, while the 2015 Charger emerges with more modern lines to blend in with the brand’s overall lineup.

Bearing a stark resemblance to its younger sibling, the Dodge Dart, the 2015 Charger sports a blacked-out grille, slimmer headlights, exclusive C-shaped LED daytime running lights, a revised bumper and reworked hood, amongst an array of other changes.

Although it looks largely unchanged, Dodge claims the 2015 Charger receives new front and rear fenders, along with a set of redesigned doors as well. At the rear, the distinctive light bar has been replaced with something a little smoother, flaunting more curves, and dare I say it looks a little more feminine?

Power hungry, number obsessed petrolheads will be glad to hear that unlike other manufacturers that are fazing out their big blocks for smaller units, Dodge is continuing with the legendary 5.7 litre HEMI V8! Still offering the same 370 horsepower and 535 Nm of torque, it is now even more practical since it features four-cylinder deactivation technology. Should come in handy when convincing the wifey, shhh.

Dodge Challenger

It’s been a long time coming, but the Dodge Challenger finally receives a major update since it was launched back in 2007. With a carefully crafted exterior, upgraded suspension and an even better interior, the Challenger is refreshed and ready to go up against the Chevrolet Camaro and all-new Mustang.

The exterior, adopts cues from the classic 1971 Challenger and includes a new split grille, headlamps with projector halo’s, a prominent and fully functional “power bulge” hood and LED tail lamps with a glossy black outline. Though revised, the Challenger is still a lot more faithful to its decades-old ancestors than the Camaro or the Mustang, and that’s probably why like it a lot more.

Gone are the hard black plastic bits of the cabin and in comes a modern dashboard with soft-touch surfaces and a fully modern instrument cluster with a fully customizable 7-inch TFT centre display screen. Talk about keeping up with the times!

Three engines choices are available with the smallest being a 305 horsepower 3.6 litre V6. The next step up will bring you to the 5.7 litre HEMI V8, which churns out 375 horsepower and the final step is the new, absolutely mental 6.4 litre HEMI V8 that is expected to whip out 485 horsepower! Mated to an eight speed automatic transmission, the Challenger laughs at the Mustang and Camaro’s that are still struggling with 6 speed tranny’s.
