Review Summary:

Much like an international criminal, the Grand Vitara is a that has been around since 1988 and takes on different identities around the world. Formerly known as the Sidekick in the United States of America, it is now referred to as the Vitara in a few markets and the Grand Vitara in a few others, including our very own, United Arab Emirates.

Pros

The Suzuki Grand Vitara is cheaper and better looking than its rivals.

Cons

The interior is a bit shoddy for a car that almost tips into the AED 100,000 range.

Looks

Currently in its third generation, the Grand Vitara looks better than ever before. Flaunting a revised grille, bumper and headlamps, the 2014 model of the compact Japanese SUV showcases a handsome form. As far as the front end goes, there’s no differentiating between the three door and five door variants, but make your way to the rear and the different tail lamp clusters are a giveaway.

Feels

Following in the footsteps of its siblings, the Suzuki Grand Vitara houses circular A/C vents and a rather simple, plastic  laden dashboard. The 440mm length difference in the three door and five door model thankfully aren’t seen in the leg space department, but actually in boot space that reduces drastically from 1,386 litres in the five door variant, to 964 litres in three door guise. As far as equipment is concerned, the 2014 Suzuki Grand Vitara doesn’t disappoint with cruise control, automatic air conditioning and a CD tuner with MP3 capability and an AUX port.

Engineering

The Grand Vitara’s 4-mode 4×4 system transmits power to all four wheels at all times, ensuring positive traction regardless of road surface. A switch built into the centre console allows a quick and easy swap between 4H for most driving conditions, 4H Lock for serious off-roading, 4L Lock for extreme surface conditions, and N (neutral) mode, specifically intended for towing.

On offer

Just one engine is available in the Grand Vitara, a 2.4 litre 4 cylinder that whips out 164 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 225 Nm of torque at 3,800 RPM. Though there’s no choice when it comes to the engine, there is a choice with the transmission. A 5 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic, I guess it all boils down to whether you’ve got an active left leg, really.

Verdict

Priced just below the Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander, it is unlikely that price alone will be a sole factor in which people opt for one over the other. I for one, lean towards the 2014 Suzuki Grand Vitara, based on its looks and nothing else.

      Hi Orson
I am getting a good offer for Vitara and seriously considering it. But I drive like 5000 km a month and fuel economy does matter to me. Would be very helpful if you can share your experiences in this vehice on aspects like driving comfort, fuel efficiency (actually how many kilometres do you get on a full tank and how much does it cost to fill up) and cabin noise level. Thanks for your time.
