Review Summary:

Volvo’s S60 has long since been the un-obvious choice for those looking for a compact executive car. Usually people are drawn towards the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, or the Mercedes C-Class. As these cars take a plunge in coolness, expect to see more and more S60’s on the UAE’s roads.

Pros

Compared to its German rivals, the S60 is simply stunning
It is extremely well priced
The powerful engine just completes the entire package

Cons

Interior same as other models

Looks

The 2014 is a brilliant looking car, a refreshing change from the unimaginative dross that its German rivals like to slap into their showroom windows. Compare the front with the Mercedes C-Class and you’ll find the Volvo is more proportionate and charming. Now compare the side profile of the S60 with the side of a bland Audi A4… the Audi doesn’t even come close. Look at the back, how much prettier is it than that of the 3 Series? Much so. The S60 has taken on the three market leaders, and beaten it in every way.

Feels

Inside the S60 we find the comfortable and classy flat-pack furniture that we are now familiar with. The seats offer a fabulous amount of comfort and support and there is a generous amount of space available in the back. Because it looks good externally, your natural feeling inside is one of reassurance. You’ll feel like you haven’t followed the crowd, you’ll feel original.

Engineering

Here we go again with the praise for Volvo’s great attention to safety. As you would expect, the S60 comes with the standard SIPS and the City Safety collision avoidance system. Yet again, Volvo leads the way with standard features, with the list seemingly endless. Things like parking cameras, a sunroof, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and blind-spot indicators are all included.

What’s on offer?

You can choose between the entry level T5 Sport and the T5 R-Design. Both come with the standard issue 2.0 litre 4-cylinder direct injection turbo engine, the same as found in the sister V60. At 5500rpm you will be working with 240 horses, that’s 56 more than the BMW 3-Series. The T5 Sport will cost AED 139,000, and the R-Design starts at AED 154,000.

Summing it…

If everyone in the compact executive car marketplace had sense, they would trade in their German models and head straight for the Volvo showroom. But that’s not going to happen, so we’ll keep this secret between ourselves. The S60 is far better looking than its rivals, is far more powerful, is faster, and is AED 10,000 cheaper than the next cheapest, the  Audi A4. It’s comfortable and classy, spacious and fabulously well-equipped. The only thing that may stop you from buying one is the fact that it is a Volvo, and I say to that: “Stop living in the past!”
