Review Summary:

We recently road tested the new VW Passat, and labeled it as a not-so-obvious choice of large saloon. It is a very good car!

Flat looks

Looks

As commented in our recent road test, the has not historically been an imaginatively designed car. It suffers from flat styling and lacks an overall sense of character. That being said, the front arrangement is very smart, with the now familiar VW sharp headlamps giving us something to enjoy. But those who are going to buy this car will not be buying it for its looks.

Feel

The feel of the Passat is one of the cars biggest plus points. Like other VW models, the interior doesn’t possess much in the way of originality; the bulk of the equipment actually comes from the Touareg. But still, the part leather seats and huge amount of space available offer a comfortable ride.

Engineering

The Passat now has a longer wheel base, which in our road test was noted for not hampering the handling. In the top of the line Sport model, Sport mode stiffens up the suspension and long-shifts the gears to give a genuinely exciting driving experience. Inside, the usual VW finishing and goodies surround you. Everything has been engineered well.

What’s on offer?

The entry S model, aimed at the more corporate customer, will set you back a reasonable AED 90,999. With this you still get a lot of goodies, including Bluetooth with voice command, ABS, and curtain airbags. The top-of-the-range Sport model is closer to AED 120,000. The latter produces 170hp from its 2.5 litre engine.

Summing it

In our road test we concluded that the Passat was a much understated car. When looking for a large family/executive saloon, people are generally drawn towards the offerings from Japan, such as the Camry, Accord, and Maxima. One key reason for this is price; the Passat is expensive by comparison. It’s a shame because it is a far superior car which is packed with lots of features and comforts. If you want to be different, see if you can afford one. If you can, great!
