Review Summary:

The Evoque is a compact SUV which has been designed for the more Urban-minded buyer. But, this being Land Rover, it has to go as well.

Economical running

Mid-range price

When the Evoque was released in 2011, the motoring press world over went gooey in the knees and hailed it as a triumph. Who could disagree? The Evoque manages to maintain an elegant Range Rover-esque façade and combine it beautifully with a compact body. Slender lamps and windows sit atop four large wheels and under a coupe-like sloped roof and subtle curves, making it look like an automotive supermodel; equivalent to Kate Moss.

It is easy to wax lyrical about this very pretty car and lose sight of one key element; it is – and by Land Rover’s own admission – a fashion accessory for the fabulous and the orange. Don’t forget that on the Special Edition model, Victoria Beckham was charged with input on the design. The interior is stupendous, especially with the red leather option. The seats are super-comfortable, the dash is leather, the centre console is smartly arranged; it feelsvery “Hollywood”.

One would assume that, as this car was built to sit outside Dubai Mall all day and be photographed, that it would be as much use off-road as a Lamborghini Aventador. But no, you can take the car out of Land Rover, but you can’t take Land Rover out of the car. The Evoque comes with Terrain Response as well as adaptive, MagneRide suspension. The under-shield looks near bullet-proof and most surprisingly of all, it’s actually quite economical. Its 2.0 litre engine will apparently manage 8.7 litres per 100 km on the motorway.

What’s on offer?

There are several variants of the Evoque available in the UAE, with the entry-level – “minimalist” as Land Rover refers to it – Pure starting at AED 199,000 and the Dynamic Plus topping the list at AED 260,000. All cars are fitted with a 2.0 litre turbo-charged straight-4 engine which emits 240 horses and does 0-100kp/h in 7.6 seconds. There are plenty of exciting features, from park assist to satellite navigation on offer.

Summing it

It’s good, the Evoque. It somehow manages to blend High Street fashion with noble off-road credentials, and comes out looking beautiful all the same. When you look at what even the basic, “minimalist” Pure model comes with, AED 199,000 doesn’t seem all that bad. But, there’s always a “but”, with the exception of the Pure it costs the same as an LR4, and even a BMW X5. It’s much smaller, but prettier, but if you want more space then you just can’t justify buying an Evoque. If you want to look sexy, however, then you just can’t justify buying anything else.
