Introduction & Summary

Talk American muscle cars and the trio of Camaro, Mustang and Challenger pops up. The eternal war of supremacy poses a very unique challenge for automakers – how to balance the nostalgic heritage of these cars to the advancements in car design and technologies, without compromising almost cult like status from their past? AutoMiddleEast takes a closer look at the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to find out more.

Styling & Design

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for 2014 is packed with high-performance, aerodynamic design cues that play a key role in keeping the beast stable at high speeds. The front end of the car gets a wider lower grille, a narrower upper grille and functioning hood ventilation, which help reduce heat. The rear end of the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro gets completely redesigned horizontal tail lights which make the car seem somewhat wider from the back. The overall design of the 2014 Camaro boasts a very buff, angry, low slung look which is perfect for the car’s purpose.

Chevrolet’s “MyLink” system has been introduced to the Camaro this time round. The system allows the user to access their phonebook, music, photos, and more through a 7 inch touch screen. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, USB, and an AUX port with a standard 3.5mm jack.

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro also comes with a head-up display, which is simple and can be customized to show performance related information. So whether you wish to see an RPM counter and speedometer combination or a speed0metre and G-force meter combination of the screen, the head up display can be set up accordingly.

Performance, Ride & Handling

In this day and age where European car makers are opting for smaller engines with turbo boosts, the Americans are not shying away from big engines. As blatant as it gets, the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is powered by a 6.2 litre V8. As if that wasn’t enough, Chevrolet slapped on a 1.9 litre twin-screw Supercharger on it. The result is a thoroughly enjoyable 580 horses of pure power galloping through a 6 speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels. Torque generation clocks in a mighty 750 Nm!

(You can breathe now…)

This setup is capable of propelling the monster from a standstill to 100 km/h in a staggering 4.1 seconds. The fun does not end there, because this car has one of the best sounding exhaust notes I have ever heard. It is loud, deep and beastly, almost bordering on vampiric hysteria.

A set of electronic nannies help keep this beast on a leash and prevent its tail from sliding out, especially if you have a heavy right foot. The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 comes with five different drive modes – Regular, Sport, Wet, Dry and the icing on the cake being the Race mode. With traction control turned off, stability control set to competitive and the drive mode set to race, the launch control is finally active. Bury the loud pedal to the floor, and instantaneously the furious American charges ahead, leaving nothing but dust behind while your head is attracted to the headrest like poles of opposite magnets – now this is my type of fun!

With power on an open tap, the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 propels itself without hesitation. My favourite performance related feature has to be the perfect gearshift point indicator. When in Sport mode, you get a bar on the head-up display that lights red to orange to yellow to green from both ends moving towards the centre which gives you the perfect moment to shift gears using the paddle shifters to get the most out of each gear. Nice!

2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 wheels

This car has all the goods that allow it to race around town in a loud cloud of tire smoke, but it also has the braking power to keep this machine in check. The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has 6 piston brakes for each of the front wheels and 4 piston brakes for each of the rear wheels. A cooling system directs air from the lower grille through ducts to the large ventilated Brembo brakes, to help bring out the optimum effectiveness.

Handling is not this car’s area of expertise. The rear wheel drive setup means that the car is tail happy when the gas is applied through corners. That’s when the adaptive stability control kicks in and keeps things on the tarmac. In retrospection, isn’t that what you’d want a car of this sort to do – play a tug of war between the massive torque that the 6.2 liter V8 produces and keeping the car well behaved? A bit of wild attitude works wonders for us. It’s far too easy to bring out the rebel in this car, one that is far too keen to bend the rules of civilised driving.

The ZL1 has two suspension modes; Tour and Sport. The magnetic ride suspension actively adjusts depending on driving style and road conditions.

Comfort & Practicality

The steroid-fed Camaro is extremely thirsty, where a full tank would give you no more than 320 Kms of range. Fuel consumption at highway speeds averaged out at 16.3 L/100Km and in urban conditions the figure was around the 18 L/100Km mark. This, along with reduced visibility all around the car makes it less practical as a daily driver, but more of a weekend fun car. The Recaro sports seats, however are well designed, which makes driving the ZL1 a comfortable yet thrilling ride.

Price & Verdict

The starting price of the 2104 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is AED 230,000 which gives you the highest power to price ratio in the category! Keep in mind this is the most powerful Camaro ever produced. I think this price is very good if you are looking to buy a when compared to its rivals. Even with limited time in the ZL1, it was nothing short of spectacular. I have never enjoyed a car as much as the ZL1 and it has definitely earned a spot in my top 5 favourite cars.
