Review Summary:

What were the suited people at BMW thinking when they pulled the plug on the absolutely stunning 8-Series back in 1999? We’re not sure, but the 6-Series they brought in 2003 to fill the gap was definitely not the answer. Thankfully, we think they’ve got it now though.

Pros

Exterior styling
Interior finishing
Consistency in design along all three body types

Cons

Ridiculous price tag

Looks

Currently in its third generation, the 2014 BMW 6-Series is something the previous generation model wasn’t – striking.  Available as a two door , four door Gran , and two door , you’d end up spending hours trying to find what differentiates the three in terms of design. A minute chrome insert in the lower grille, and placement of the rear stop lamp, is all that sets the Gran apart from the other two.

Feels

With wood running along the steering, centre console and door panels, an abundance of leather all round and an Alcantara roof to top it all off, the 6-Series is an expensive set of wheels, and it sure does feel like it as well. Although all three body styles offer 4 seats, the 113 mm increase in wheelbase and 23 mm in height on the Gran Coupe means rear seat passengers benefit from improved head and leg room, in addition to ease of access through the rear doors.

Engineering

According to the guys at BMW, it takes one second, or 28 meters precisely, for you to take your eyes off the road and glance at the speed-o-metre. To increase safety and reduce the number of distractions, the 6-Series is equipped with an intelligent Head-Up Display that projects navigation directions, warnings from the BMW Night Vision, Speed limits and lane departure warnings to ensure maximum attention is paid to the road ahead.

What’s on offer?

The 2014 6-Series is available with two engine choices under the hood; one being a V6 and the other, a V8. The twin turbo 3.0 litre V6 produces 320 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque which translates to a 0 – 100 km/h time of just 5.4 seconds. But it is the superior 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 that generates an astonishing 450 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque while being mated to an 8 speed sport auto transmission, that propels the beast from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds!

Summing it…

Good looking, practical and powerful, it may be. But the 2014 BMW 6-Series wears a ludicrous price tag of AED 360,000 – AED 430,000. And we wonder why, because all of a sudden, the Audi A7’s price tag of AED 238,000 – AED 265,000 seems like a bargain!
