Review Summary:

The GTI killer. Or better yet, ’s answer to VW’s most celebrated Golf has landed in the UAE. The 2+1 door car introduces a beefier version of itself to join the sport scene. The 2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo is here!

Pros

Exterior Styling.

Cons

Will only be available in March 2014. Price seems steep when compared to the competitors who offer superior performance.

Looks

Hyundai Veloster Turbo Front

Following in the Genesis Coupe’s footsteps, the 2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo looks like it’s been to the gym with its massive horizontal grille which sucks in double the amount of air to keep that Turbo-charger cool on those throttle happy days. The 18” blender-like, razor sharp, alloy wheels are the thorns to this rose and the 2 mesh vents that slice their way through the bonnet are intended as hood-scoops which contribute more to the car’s styling rather than functionality. The squared exhausts have been ditched for 2 circular tail pipes. And if you’re joining the sport hatchback scene, you’ll need the rear spoiler to fit in that crowd, a detail Hyundai certainly hasn’t forgotten.

Feels

2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Seats

Inside the cabin there’s a constant reminder that you’re in a sporty car, with words like “Turbo” stitched into the front seats and “dual-clutch” printed on the gear lever. The 2 tone interior, paddle shifters, and semi-bolstered seats also add a racier feel to the Veloster. It’s apparent how much attention to detail the designers focused on, with its original door armrest handles that hovers close to the door panel – connected at the base of course. The long vertical air vents engulf the 7 inch screen and gradually funnel the buttons downwards, where they meet the Start-Stop button.

Twister players will find entering the extra door in the back a breeze but for those not used to arching into awkward positions, it might be a bit tricky at first. The left side of the rear cabin gets the full coupe treatment with a small window that does not budge. Hyundai, however, compensates for that by designing a large rear window that connects to the panoramic roof giving off a more open air feeling to relieve claustrophobics. The rear seats can fit 2 average sized adults that don’t mind head-butting the ceiling on bumpy roads.

Engineering

2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Dashboard

The Veloster Turbo packs in a decent amount of tech; as standard, a 7” touch screen for multimedia and navigation, Bluetooth, parking sensors, USB & AUX ports, push button Start-Stop and a reverse camera.

What’s on offer?

2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Exhausts

Hyundai’s 1.6-liter (204 HP, 165 NM) Gamma turbocharged engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger that when combined with the GDI system, results in quick power delivery. Thanks in part to the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), the Veloster Turbo is expected to provide smoother and quicker shifts.

Summing it…

VW Golft GTI, Hyundai Veloster Turbo, Ford Focus ST Collage

A definite head turner. As far as prices are concerned, the Hyundai Veloster Turbo has an edge over the more expensive Ford Focus ST and Vokswagen Golf GTI. However, as soon as performance is factored into the equation, the Hyundai lacks the go to match its show, unlike its competitors.
