For 2014, the tall, upright, somewhat boxy Tiida of the past has morphed into a modern with an injection of new technology. The car is wider and longer than the one it replaces and naturally, costs more.

Looks

In comparison to its predecessor, the 2014 certainly looks modern and up to date with times. The car looks well planted and has a grown up feel to it. Soft creases and flowing character lines remind of the design trend that Mazda started a few years back. The new car falls in line with the rest of the cars in its appearance and looks familiar.

In a nutshell, will the 2014 Nissan Tiida turn heads? No – it’s a few notches away and a tad late for that.

Feels

Inside, the new car feels refreshing. It can take in 5 adults with ease. Headroom and legroom are offered in abundance for normal sized mortals, by that I mean those cutting it a bit less than 6 foot in height. Use of earth colors infuses a sense of calmness in its well lit cabin. As on the outside, soft edges and uncluttered layout resonates inside the car. Quality of materials used is at par with expectations.

Engineering

The 2014 Nissan Tiida comes with two power plants – a 116 horsepower, 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine and a 130 horsepower 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine. Nissan has coupled both engines to its new generation Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which basically means that the new Tiida gets infinite gear ratios.

Interestingly enough, a 5 speed manual transmission is also offered, but only for the 1.6 liter engine. Manual transmission in this segment of cars is not the most preferred one in this part of the world. It is likely that if you want one, it will be on order.

What’s on offer?

Two engine options and two variants in each engine option, totalling up to 4 variants, are on the block.

Base model 1.6 litre variant costs AED 59,400 (US$ 16,172). The top specced variant in the same engine size costs AED 65,100 (US$ 17,724).

The bigger engined base version of the 2014 Nissan Tiida will set you back by AED 71,300 (US$ 19,412). While the fully loaded 1.8 litre car will cost an astronomical AED 82,100 (US$ 22,352)

Power windows, Dual airbags, power steering, central locking, keyless entry and anti lock braking system come standard on all variants. As you climb the price ladder, goodies such as sunroof, rear parking sensors, 17 inch alloys wheels, cruise control, steering mounted controls, leather seats and more fall into your lap, or rather you fall into theirs.

A 3 year, 100,000 km manufacturer warranty is offered on the car, which is occassionally topped up by another 2 years by the Nissan dealer. If this be the case, the car gets 5 years, unlimited mileage warranty.

First service is at 1000 km and at every 5000 km interval thereafter. Check for free services with your local Nissan dealer. At times, the purchase price includes first two services, i.e., the 1000 km and 5000 km service.

Summing it…..

What it gets for 2014 – lots of new, consumer friendly technology, modern looks, flowing and uncluttered design.

What it does not get – the sedan version from the previous generation Tiida is now shelved. Instead, Nissan wants you to look at their Sentra sedan.

Talking of which, with a price band that ranges from AED 59,400 for the 1.6 liter base version going right up to AED 82,100 for top of the range 1.8 liter variant, why would you not want to consider a Sentra or even an entry level Altima for that matter? Unless, you are hell bent on buying a hatchback only.

The 2014 Nissan Tiida comes across as a smart, grown-up car with a decent amount of goodies inside. Besides other Nissan cars, it has shades of design cues first seen on Mazda cars. While the top spec 1.6 liter at AED 65,100 would seem like a reasonable price point, anything above that is a bit much of an asking for this car.
