2012 GMC Terrain | new car review

The Terrain sits at the bottom of ’s line-up for the Middle East, propping up a size range that goes all the way up to the mighty and menacing Yukon. Even though it gets a large badge sitting prominently on the grille, GM Daewoo mostly developed the Terrain in South Korea. But, don’t let that put you off too much if you are looking in this small but practical soft-roader segment, because the Terrain does boast more American charm than it does Korean clatter.

General Motors, GMC’s parent company, has virtually abandoned any pretense that the Terrain an off-roader; the 2.4 petrol model comes with front-wheel-drive only, and even the four-wheel-drive options have no locking differentials, low-ratio gears or any other off-roading aids bar electronic hill descent control. Think of this as a high-riding family station wagon, not a 4×4. The seats are available with leather in an option that comes with the SLT trim level, but not the SLE.

The trunk has a high load floor, but is long and, with the rear seats folded, flat, and as expected in family cars these days, there’s a useful amount of storage holes, cupholders, sunglasses holders, a large glovebox, as well as a 12-volt power socket, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and separately-opening tailgate glass. Standard safety equipment includes front, side and curtain airbags and ABS, in fact; in general, the safety and interior equipment matches the modern look of the Terrain.

Two petrol engines are offered with the Terrain, both mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, with a manual shifting option called Active Select.

The 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine makes 182bhp and 235Nm of torque and promises impressive fuel economy. The larger 3-litre engine produces 264bhp of maximum power and 300Nm of maximum torque.

All variants of the get top safety features like six airbags as standard equipment, traction control and ABS with all four-disk breaks.
