2012 Kia Cerato | new car review

The is currently in its second generation and was unveiled in 2008. It might not look all that special, but the  is actually the Korean company’s biggest selling car.

A two-door version of the Cerato, the Koup was launched in the second half of 2011. The Koup gets a bigger 2-litre inline four engine with a maximum output of 154bhp.

It’s found a decent niche for itself as a cheap and competent sedan in America and is proving to be a surprise hit. In the Middle East it’s destined to rival the likes of the Mitsubishi Lancer and Toyota Corolla in the cutthroat world of bargain four-door sedans.

The Cerato was one of the first cars to be designed by ’s new head honcho of design Peter Schreyer – the bespectacled man responsible for such iconic modern cars like the original Audi TT. Whilst it might not have that car’s instant grab-you appeal, the Cerato is a decent looking machine – and certainly not a rehashed design that some past Korean cars have been guilty of sporting.

As with most of the Kia line-up there’s just the one engine on offer with the Cerato –a 1.6-litre inline four that replaces the older 2.0-litre inline four. This engine has a maximum output of 125bhp and is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. A 5-speed manual transmission is also available in the base variant.

The interior has a decent amount of features with the top of the line variant being equipped with climate control, all four power windows and a sunroof. Fit and finish is decent and will stand up well to the kind of abuse that kids lay out on car interiors. The stereo’s pretty good and the suspension is soft enough to give a comfortable ride for all those on board.

All variants of the Cerato, except the top variant, get a single driver-side airbag whereas the top variant gets a front passenger airbag. The Koup gets one airbag in the basic variant, two in the mid-range variant and six airbags in the top of the line variant. The mid and the top variants of the Koup also get ABS and traction control.
