2012 Nissan Altima | new car review

If you are in the market for a Japanese mid-sized sedan and you can’t ignore the taxi-cab feel of the Toyota Camry or find the Honda Accord less interesting, the Altima may be the car for you. The new 2013 Altima is due for launch in the fourth quarter of and you can read our report on it here.

In its evolution, the exteriors of the Altima have gained some youth. Designers have paid some attention to detail this time around and it does not go unappreciated. The creases on the bonnet and the twin exhaust pipes are examples of such. All in all, you are not deprived of the street presence you pay for.

The interiors share a positive vibe especially in charcoal i.e. black, be it leather or cloth. As standard the steering comes adjustable for rake and reach and sports a new age look. This 5 seater has generous compartment space both up front and the in back and the boot accommodates luggage well.

The 2.5-litre 4 cylinder produces a healthy 179 bhp, which makes for an easy city commute with no lack of passing acceleration on the highway. The 6-speed Xtronic CVT is prone to exhaust drone, but for the sake of prioritising fuel economy, this is a good choice for a transmission, if not the best. The 3.5-litre V6 makes 285bhp of maximum power and 365Nm of maximum torque.

The base model is well equipped with features such as speed sensitive steering, cruise control, and aux input. It also comes standard with the intelligent key feature for easy access and exit and a start/stop button. Upgrades bring a host of other options such as a 9 speaker Bose audio system with mp3 capability, a USB port, 4.3” colour display monitor, rear view camera, dual zone A/C, rear parking sensors, Traction Control (TCS) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC). All of which make it almost fit the entry-premium segment.
