2012 Ford EcoSport to be sold in 100+ markets

The EcoSport which made its global debut at the Delhi Auto Expo in January 2012 will be sold in 100 markets. Under the ‘One ’ global strategy, cannot make cars which are region specific unless it has a historic legacy, the F150, is a point in case.

The Ecosport is not a new nameplate as a Mk5 Fiesta-based model has been selling consistently well since the mid-2000’s in the Brazilian market. The 2012 version will be powered by a 1-liter turbocharged “Ecoboost” petrol engine that produces 120PS. The engine will be paired to 5-speed manual and 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions. The Ecosport is built on the global B-Platform which underpins three cars already (Fiesta, Fiesta sedan and the B-Max).

The five seat mini SUV is Ford’s response to the Dacia/Renault Duster that has been an extremely profitable model for Renault in Europe and South America. The Duster was designed to be an aspirational SUV for the European market where a status car is beyond the means of the middle-class who have limited options constituted chiefly of imported cars. The EcoSport with its dominating stance and chrome-infused body fittings can easily take the challenge to the Duster if priced correctly.

The design vocabulary used on the EcoSport is similar to the B-Max with a gaping grille finished in chrome, trapezoidal air dam, eagle-eyed headlamps and muscular shoulder line. Heavy component sharing with other B-Platform models could help Ford is pricing the EcoSport competitively.

Ford will start production of this model at its Chennai plant this year. The Bahia plant in Brazil is likely to be the second point of manufacture. Soon after securing a respectable position in the BRIC nations, it is likely to reach the Middle East. Ford is said to be mulling over engine options such as the 1.6-liter flex-fuel engine for the Brazilian market and the 1.5-liter Duratorq diesel for the Indian and European markets.
