2012 Ford Focus | new car review

Developed in Europe, the Focus is sold in over 120 markets worldwide with 80 per cent parts commonality. This latest generation Focus is created from Ford’s new global C1 segment platform, which was the largest platform programme during its launch in 2004.

It has a 1.6-litre Duratec Ti-VCT engine produces 125bhp of maximum power and 159Nm of peak torque. This is not an all-new engine but is an upgraded version of the previous generation engine and it now meets the stricter international emission norms. It also comes with a 2-litre Ti-VCT GDI I-4 engine that produces 160bhp at 6500rpm and has a torque output of 146Nm at 4450rpm. All variants come with a six-speed automatic gearbox. The auto box lets you select either a normal drive mode or the sports mode. It also has a manual-shifting option via the SelectSwitch located on the side of the gear knob.  This dry-clutch PowerShift unit is claimed to reduce fuel consumption.

The Focus’s look is the result of Ford’s Kinetic design approach. This latest iteration was designed at Ford’s design studio in Europe and it’s needless to say that the European styling certainly works in favour of this car. The contemporary look of the outside is carried on inside in the form of a well-designed dashboard which is every bit as stylish as the exterior. The dashboard is very driver focused with the centre console housing a built-in single CD player, an infotainment display and vertically placed air vents.

The top of the line Focus gets six airbags while the entry level and the mid-level trims get only front airbags. All cars come with ABS as standard.
