The 2012 Fortuner was conceived with the emerging markets in mind. It is assembled in India, Thailand, South Africa and South America and is based on the proven Hilux platform. It is priced very competitively and offers an opportunity for the budget conscious buyers who want to get on the SUV bandwagon.

The Fortuner is available with a 4-litre or a 2.7-litre VVVT-i petrol engine. The 2.7-litre engine produces 158hp at 5200rpm and 241Nm of torque at 3800rpm. Mated to this engine is a four-speed automatic transmission. The bigger 4-litre engine makes 235hp at 5200rpm and 375Nm of torque at 3800rpm. A five-speed automatic comes standard on the 4-litre version.

The 2.7-litre entry-level version comes with the following as standard, a USB/AUX/Bluetooth enabled music system, fully adjustable steering column, dual airbags, third row seats and a manually adjustable drivers seat. On the outside it gets fog lamps, a rear spoiler, towing hooks, rear parking sensors and 17-inch alloy wheels as standard.

The 4-litre variant comes in two trims, the basic trim gets a dual zone climate control, floor illumination, leather and wood finished interior, ABS, cruise control, rear differential lock, front and rear parking sensors and auto leveling HID headlamps.

The top of the line gets all of the above along with leather seats and a multi functional display.
