Ferrari 458 Spider – Topless ‘Italia’n
Posted on August 23, 2011 by Editor
Ferrari have launched the much anticipated 458 Spider, the world’s first mid-rear engined car with an all-aluminium retractable hard top. Quite unbelievably it weighs 25 kg less than a traditional soft-top yet there is a 23% increase in both torsional rigidity and beam stiffness as compared to the F430 Spider. In need of fresh air or have had too much of it, 14 seconds is all it takes to lower or raise the tin-top. Even aerodynamic efficiency has improved by 12% over the F430 Spider.
The Italian prancer retains the 458 Italia’s naturally-aspirated, 562bhp Direct Injection 4.5-litre V8 engine, the winner of the 2011 International Engine of the Year Award. Top speed is down by 6, now at 320km/h but 0 to 100km/h can still be clocked in 3.4 seconds. The HELE systems that include Stop&Start functionality and Electronic variable displacement A/C compressor have rendered emissions as low as 275 g/km and fuel economy as high as 11.8l/100km.
Up next…458 Scuderia!
