claims pickup to be the world's fastest pickup

BMW has created a new body variant for its M3 high-performance – a pickup.

This unique vehicle completed extensive test and set-up drives on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife in advance of its global unveiling. Although official lap times has not been released, but the needle in the dial points at a top speed of 300 km/h.

With 420 hp coming out of a high revving V8 engine under the bonnet and a rear axle load capacity of up to 450 kilos, BMW claims this to be the fastest pickup in the world.

The load bed of the Pickup is clad in high-grade structured aluminum sheeting and naturally provides the biggest cargo capacity ever offered on a BMW M vehicle. The loading area of the Pickup has the capacity to carry up to 20 standard 46-inch golf bags. What’s more, the Pickup is the first variant in the 25-year-plus history of this model range to come with a trailer tow hitch.

BMW has tested the M pickup performance on the Nürburgring circuit.

Measurements in the wind tunnel at the BMW Group’s Aerodynamic Test Centre showed a Cd factor on a par with that of the BMW M3 Coupé.

However, the pickup will never see the light of the day as far as commercial production is concerned. It’s an exclusive one-off that will be used as a workshop transport vehicle for BMW M GmbH and for the purpose has earned its road certification making it officially a truck – but one that puts a whole new spin on the meaning of the word.

Right, now that you have read the story, read this as well – Dirk Arnold, head of communication at BMW has to say this about the M3 pickup – “Ah, yes, everyone’s been talking about that pickup. But, no, this is… how you call it, an April Fool’s Joke” [in German “Aprilscherz” – ed.]. There will be no M3 pickup in our futures, kids.” Our friends at Autoblog.com did the talking to Arnold.
