Tesla Roadster | Electric Sports Car review
Posted on January 2, 2011 by Pankaj Dev
Tesla’s Roadster is world’s first high performance electric car. It is fast, sassy, fun to drive and you will never need to drive the car into a petrol station to fill up high octane fuel.
The car was officially unveiled to the public in Jul 2006 and Tesla has delivered 1200 cars across the world till Jul 2010. Although based on the Lotus Elise platform, and Lotus still puts the Roadster together for Tesla, the car is significantly different than the Elise. For starts, none of the Roadster’s body parts are shared with the Elise. All of Roadster’s body panels are made of carbon fiber to keep the weight down, and just about 8% of total parts in the car are shared with the Lotus.
The claim that the 288 ponies in the Tesla Roadster make it as quick as any conventional fuel powered sports car is no myth. This electric car has a top speed of just over 201kph and can do a 0 – 96 km in 3.9 seconds. As if this was not good enough, Tesla came up with a sporty Roadster version that does the same distance in 3.7 seconds.
Charging the battery is simply a job of plugging the car into a 240 volt power supply. Charge time from empty to full using the Tesla’s hi – power plug in charger is just a 3.5 hour job and the Roadster gives you 394km run on a single full charge.
One of the main reasons for the Tesla’s extraordinary range is that there is 53 kwH of lithium ion battery behind the passenger compartment; 6,831 little laptop batteries all wired up together, in fact. By comparison, Chevy’s upcoming Volt boasts but 16 kwH and the Nissan Leaf only 24.
With 14 exterior color options and 11 interior color options, the Tesla Roadster will set you back or propel you forward, depending on how you see it, by close to 600.000 UAE Dirhams.
