Iconic British sports car maker Lotus will launch their first city car in October 2013, according to company head Dany Bahar.

The Lotus city car concept was showcased at the 2010 Paris Motor Show along with five other sports car concepts.

The city car got the least attention but has nonetheless been confirmed thanks to the sales promise it holds for the niche car maker.

The Lotus city car will be developed in partnership with Malaysia’s Proton and another, as-yet-unnamed OEM/car company. It will feature a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine mated to electric motors and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The three-door rear-wheel drive mini-car will be able to run solely on battery power at low speeds with the engine kicking in when more power is required. Lotus intends to build three versions of the new city car; one for Asia, another for Europe and one sports model for enthusiasts.

There is no official word on whether the Lotus city car will be launched in the Middle East.
