Italian sports car maker Lamborghini has ceased the production of the Murciélago after a nine year run.

The Murciélago was Lamborghini’s flagship car since it made its debut back in 2001. 4,099 units of the were built during this nine year period and the last one has been sold to a buyer in Switzerland.

The announcement of the Murciélago being phased out has also come with a confirmation that the supercar’s successor is in the final stages of development. The Jota LP700-4 based supercar will replace the Murciélago in 2011 and could debut as early as the Geneva Motor Show in March’ 2011.
