Suzuki’s SX-4 arrived in the Middle East in 2007 as a , but is now also available in sedan form.

Like the rest of the Suzuki range, it aims to offer an alternative to more established brands by priding itself on sporty styling and a bargain price – the entry-level SX-4 costs just 44,500AED.

The name SX-4 stands for Sport Crossover, and the 4 indicated all-wheel drive, although we wouldn’t like to tackle too many sand dunes in the hatchback version, especially as the version we get here only has front wheel drive. The sedan comes with front wheel drive too.

Two engine options are available. The 1.6-litre, four-cylinder unit makes 99bhp while a 2.0-litre engine makes a more usable 140bhp. Both are attached to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

The hatch is only available in GL spec with the 2.0-litre engine, and rides on 17-inch alloys. The sedan comes in either GL or GLX spec with the 1.6-litre engine, and with the 2.0-litre unit in GLX trim only. The GL sedan rides on steel wheels and is equipped with a CD player with MP3 capability, while the GLX models get leather seats, a 6CD changer and alloy wheels, as well as front fog lamps.

Other features include power windows, climate control and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

Safety features include ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution, which keeps the car stable in the event of an emergency stop. Dual front airbags protect the driver and front seat passenger in case of a crash.
