2011 Grand Cherokee production launch

Jeep has begun production of the next-generation 2011 Grand Cherokee at its Detroit plant.

This is the most significant model for its parent company since the American carmaker went bankrupt and aligned with Italy’s Fiat.

The new 2011 Grand Cherokee remains true to its off-road heritage but also boasts new features for improved on-road dynamics. It also looks more contemporary thanks to softer and more sophisticated styling. It will be available in three variants; Laredo, Limited and Overland and will also come with a two-wheel drive option. Highlights include a 3.6-litre V6 engine with 290bhp, an improved suspension setup (air-lift suspension optional) and increased towing capacity.

Chrysler claims that the new Grand Cherokee is quieter, safer, more powerful and fuel efficient than the previous generation model. To build the new Grand Cherokee, Chrysler has added production staff and started a new shift at its Detroit plant.

The 2011 Grand Cherokee goes on sale in the US this June. You can see video footage of the new car in action here.
