2010 Lexus GX 460 judged ‘Don’t buy - Safety risk’ by Consumer Reports, Toyota halts sale

2010 460 has been rated unsafe by Consumer Reports, forcing to halt sales

Toyota has suspended sale of 2010 GX 460 around the world following Consumer Reports magazine’s recommendation to not buy this SUV over safety concerns.

The influential US magazine warned car shoppers not to buy the SUV because handling problems could cause them to roll over on sharp turns.

Within hours of the warning, Toyota asked its US dealers to stop sales of this vehicle. US Government safety officials and engineers at Toyota Japan are testing the sport utility vehicle to try to replicate the magazine’s findings.

It should be noted that the Japanese automaker recalled over 8 million cars and SUV’s over defective accelerator pedals not so long ago and has been slapped a fine of $16.4 million.

In this case, Consumer Reports said the vehicle’s electronic stability control did not intervene quick enough to stop the vehicle from sliding out in a turn. When pushed to its limits, the rear slid out almost sideways before it regained control. Although the magazine said it is not aware of any Lexus GX 460 actually rolling over, the risk of a rollover accident in the GX 460 was significant because it is a tall SUV with a high center of gravity. It tested two separate vehicles, both of which experienced the problem, but neither rolled over. It said no other SUV had slid as far as the Lexus in its recent testing.

Mark Templin, Lexus Group vice president and general manager – US said, “For more than 20 years, Lexus has made customer safety and satisfaction our highest priorities.  We are taking the situation with the GX 460 very seriously and are determined to identify and correct the issue Consumer Reports identified. At this time we have asked our dealers to temporarily suspend sales of the 2010 GX 460.”

Update: (April 15, 2010) Lexus in the UAE has confirmed that it has suspended sales of the GX 460 after safety concerns in the US.

Simon Frith, managing director of UAE distributors Al Futtain Motors, said: “Yesterday we temporarily suspended sales of this model following the concern regarding the response time of the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) under extreme cornering conditions. In the meantime we are working closely with Lexus to fully investigate this concern.”

“We are contacting all our GX460 customers to explain the situation and will keep them updated as more information becomes available. We will also provide a courtesy car if any customer who has purchased a GX460 is concerned about driving their vehicle.”

Customers have further questions they can contact Al Futtaim’s customer care team on 04 206 6002 between 8am and 6pm.
