The 159 replaced the 156 sedan when it came on the scene back in 2005. However, it’s now beginning to show its age and is due for replacement in 2011.

The 159 is a sporty sedan which also forms the base for the Alfa Brera and the Alfa Spider. It is however the most practical of the three and can seat four adults in comfort and accommodate their luggage in its big 405-litre boot.

The 159 is also the cheapest among the three but still appears pricey as it is in the price range of the BMW 3-Series and the Audi A4.

The engine range includes a 185bhp 2.2-litre four-cylinder unit and a 260bhp 3.2-litre V6 powerplant which comes with a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and four-wheel drive.

The V6-powered 159 is however 250kg heavier than the four-cylinder version due to the bigger engine and four-wheel drive transmission. Though this negates some of the performance gains, the bigger engine affords the 159 is known to offer an engaging drive and hit a top speed of 240kph. The interiors are well appointed and furnished with premium materials including plastics, brushed aluminium, chrome and leather.

As with most Alfas the 159’s safety kit is extensive and includes seven airbags as standard with optional knee airbags. VDC (vehicle dynamic control), ABS with EBD, ventilated disc brakes front and rear, Hill Holder, ABS with EBD and anti-whiplash front seats are also standard and enabled the 159 to receive a five-star Euro NCAP crash rating for adult occupants.
