Next generation BMW M3 to feature six-cylinder heart and no sedan version

BMW has been shuffling its engine lineup across the model range and now it’s the turn of the M3 to get a change of heart. The next generation M3 which is expected only by 2012 will ditch the current 4.0 litre V8 engine for a twin-turbo six-cylinder unit. The inline six-cylinder unit will be lighter and more efficient while producing about 450bhp instead of 414bhp which the current V8 belts out.

Performance is expected to get a boost owing to the lower weight and higher power, much to the delight of M3 fans. The twin-turbo engine also affords a flat torque curve translating into more even power delivery across the rev band. Reports suggest that BMW will no longer offer the next generation M3 in sedan form and that the coupe and convertible will be the only body styles available.
